Computer Systems Internship Position Description
TITLE: Computer Systems Intern
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
To assist wherever needed with projects related to computer engineering, systems analysis, programming, and/or network administration. Interns may be involved with:
- Research and testing of current computer systems
- Analyzing technical requirements for a network strategy and building networks
- Writing, testing, debugging, and maintaining computer programs
- Software development
- Other related activities
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Reporting Relationship:
- Reports to the Chief Technology Officer or Computer Engineering Supervisor
- Performance goals set each month, with a monthly performance review
KEY TASKS:
The following is a list of the POSSIBLE tasks involved in a typical computer systems internship. Previous computer engineering internships have involved a wide variety of one or more of the following tasks:
Research and Testing Computer Systems
- Research how IT system is being used, and suggest ways to improve efficiency and ease of use
- Test new system components and designs, and fix problems
Develop New Computer Systems
- Review test results and develop new computer systems, languages, data communication processes and user interface devices
- Produce design documents for the system, using charts and diagrams that indicate the various steps involved
Analyze Computer Networks
- Analyze data flows and technical requirements to define a network strategy
- Recommend the types of components, peripherals, physical space, and equipment necessary for an optimized network
- Assist in building an appropriate network
Computer Programming
- Write, modify, test, and document program code to enhance a program’s capabilities and/or to solve problems
- Prepare appropriate documentation on the status, operation, and maintenance of the system software as necessary for users and company management
Computer Engineering
- Install, repair and service computers and related equipment
- Recommend and implement a regular computer service program
- Troubleshoot problems and implement solutions
- Suggest appropriate site preparation, cable locations and hardware locations required to run an IT system across small, medium, and/or large environments
A Computer systems internship may involve ANY ONE, OR ANY COMBINATION, of the above-mentioned tasks.

- Experience working with a diverse team environment with staff, suppliers and managers
Desired experience and knowledge
- 2 years of University in a Computer systems course or equivalent course preferred
- Experience in one or more areas of computer engineering
- Extremely computer literate
- Enjoys computers and helping to improve computer working environments
- Energetic and highly adaptable to a diverse working environment
- Very organized and detail-oriented
- Has a “Do whatever it takes”, “Never give up” attitude
- Good writing skills in English
