Early childhood education
Working and assisting teachers in kindergartens and pre-school education centres. We have 1 student doing this and 2 more lined up to start soon. So far, the kindergarten is really happy with the young woman. She does have a lot of experience and she is now working in a paid capacity as a the relief teacher. I think the other 2 interns will be able to pick up some paid babysitting jobs as well in the evenings if they want to.

The same girl also did a research assignment working how to improve logistics efficiencies for exports to Australia. She had education and experience. The company loved her and she loved the company and they gave her quite a nice reward at the end of her internship as she saved them a lot of money with her findings.

Natural Sciences
We have a student doing a research assignment that goes something like this... “Regulation of the expression of milk and defence protein genes and how to open the DNA promoters controlling these genes. Using a Chromatin Accessibility measurement by Real Time (CHART) assay, studies indicate that a casein promoter is open during lactation and closed during involution/mastitis. Indications are that the converse situation occurs with a defence gene (LAP) but the assay requires more optimisation. We plan to extend this study in more stored tissues (udder development, induced involution, mastitis) and expand the range of genes examined.” Obviously she is well educated and had some lab experience.
We have a student doing a Marine biology research assignment for one of the world leaders in Marine Biology. She had a Marine Biology degree but it is a real coup to get this placement ahead of so many New Zealanders.
