Coming to Meeteetse

Coming to MeeteetseAnker was definitely the best thing that ever happened to me. Even though I have to admit I’d have never chosen this small town, it impressed me in so many ways. I met wonderful people and made great friends; I experienced the advances of a small high school and a loving community.

Schüleraustausch USAOf course I still remember the very first day, coming out of the plane, my nerves were exploding and my heart was beating fast. I still couldn’t believe that this is what I’ve dreamed about for so long. I looked around and recognized the family I’ve seen on a picture before, smiling at me, and ready to welcome me to a new life with balloons and little gifts. At that point I didn’t know that the Baker’s will become so much more than just a host family to me.

The way home was certainly an adventure. Talking to my new family in an unfamiliar language was a huge challenge; besides the nature was so impressive, I could have starred out of the window the whole time. When we came to Meeteetse, once again, my heart started beating fast. What would my new home look like? What would my room look like? When I came into the house I immediately felt comfortable and I knew I’d like it. The only thing leaving me wondering was the dead deer on the wall. I just hoped my room would be without that kind of decorations. By now, of course, I got used to it and it’s totally normal, but back then I was kind of irritated.

The first day of school was probably one of the most challenging parts of this year. I was so glad that both my host sisters went with me and I wasn’t totally on my own. But still, I was kind of lost. Where was I supposed to go? Do I pay for my lunch? What’s up with this little snack in the morning? It took me a while to figure all that out, but once I got used to the everyday life it was fine.

The first weeks of school were crazy. I had to remember all the names, work on my language skills, and get used to the American way of life. The very first weekend I went camping with all the exchange students. We drove up to a great lake and I fell in love with Wyoming’s nature. Even after nine months, I am still fascinated by it. Playing volleyball was a blessing; I loved hanging out with the girls, going to games and even practices were so enjoyable. Homecoming was a celebration I never had before and I loved it. Especially dress up days, the dance, and the fun activities were so cool. I wish we had that in Germany!

Schüleraustausch USAAnd then winter came and brought snow and cold wind. I was surprised winter started that early, but I loved the snow. I went sledding and skiing with friends, and enjoyed it so much. Soon basketball season started and I never thought a team could make that big of a difference. Riding horses with the team, playing laser tag and throwing eggs at each other were wonderful memories I made with the team. But of course playing basketball was the best, even long bus rides were fun.

Thanksgiving was another wonderful experience. Since we don’t have Thanksgiving in Germany, it was my first time to celebrate it. The food was awesome and I ate way too much. Homesick? Not at all! Christmas was fantastic and yet so different. We spent Christmas at Disneyland, in California and the trip was fun and unforgettable. I remember all the good times I had with my host family, who were by then more than that to me. A little homesickness was unavoidable at that time, but I got over it fast. There was no time to think about home. We had basketball, winter formal, FCCLA and baby lambs. The last was a new experience as well. Seeing these little cute lambs and helping raising them was a chance I may not get in life again. When track started I couldn’t believe that it still snowed and therefore many meets were cancelled. But track is still lots of fun and I love it.

Schüleraustausch USAProm was probably one of the most exciting things. I loved getting ready with the girls, dancing in these wonderful long dresses and the decorations were so amazing! I loved it and I wished it never ended.

I wished I could stay here longer and experience even more! This whole year was incredible and I learned so much more than the culture and language. I learned social skills, academic skills and skills that will help me in life; to never give up and follow your dreams. I encourage everyone to take a risk and become an exchange student, it’s a chance you will never get again.
